| Pharmacology | Semisynthetically produced from chlortetracycline, which is derived from Streptomyces aureofaciens, tetracycline is classified as a short-acting tetracycline. Tetracycline is used to treat infections due to rickettsia, Mycoplasma pneumonia, and chlamydia, Lyme disease, brucellosis, and syphilis by inhibiting protein synthesis in the susceptible organisms. | ||
| Mechanism Of Action | Tetracyclines passively diffuse through porin channels in the bacterial membrane, reversibly binding to the 30 S ribosomal subunit, preventing binding of tRNA to the mRNA-ribosome complex, and thus interfering with protein synthesis. | ||
